Picture our tomorrow today … When I was very young, the treatment for my hemophilia was very limited and trips to the hospital were needed twice a day during bleeds. Because of my frequent ankle bleeds, I walked like the ducks in the bottom of the photo. When I was eight, factor VIII concentrate was made available and it let me spread my wings for the first time. I no longer needed to stay within reach of a hospital for the sake of factor replacement and, despite my weak ankles, I was able to play soccer and ski. Tomorrow the treatment for hemophilia will be like the angelic wings on the bird at the top of the photo … it will lift us up above handicapped status and will let us soar and reach our true potential.
